Hakstol gives insight into Kraken's Gourde, Burakovsky and Wright |
During his Tuesday interview with Seattle Sports' Bump and Stacy, Seattle Kraken head coach Dave Hakstol shared some insight into three Kraken players who all enter this offseason in very different situations. The Kraken may be the NHL's newest franchise, but they have plenty of postseason experience on their roster. Center Yanni Gourde is among those with a ton of playoff ice time, as he won two Stanley Cups during his time with the Tampa Bay Lightning. |

Why NHL expansion teams are so good, so fast |
The Vegas Golden Knights and Seattle Kraken — the National Hockey League's two newest franchises by far — have been among the league's most impressive teams in this year's playoffs. The backdrop: Before the Golden Knights' inaugural 2017-18 season, the NHL changed its expansion draft rules to increase the pool of players available for selection. The league wanted expansion teams to be able to compete right away, and their plan worked — immediately. The Golden Knights won 51 games and reached the Stanley Cup Final that first season, and are just the third team in NHL history to reach the conference finals four times in their first six years. |

Ashley Vallejo tossed a six-hit shutout in McNeese State's 1-0 win over Minnesota Saturday night to keep the Cowgirls season alive at the Seattle Regional of the NCAA tournament. The win sends the Cowgirls (46-15) into Sunday's championship round against host Washington (40-12). Game one is at 3 p.m. A Washington win gives the Huskies the regional championship and a home series in the Super Regional round next weekend. |

KC has a surprisingly solid hockey history. What could it look like in the future? |
A movement towards a new arena for the NHL's Arizona Coyotes was struck down May 16 by the Tempe City Council, leading to local support for and speculation on the possibility of the team moving to Kansas City in the future. If these fireworks were to occur, the 'yotes would still be at least 15 years behind the longest standing professional hockey franchise in the region, the Lamar Hunt, Jr. owned Kansas City Mavericks. |

At the top of Kraken forward Matty Beniers' offseason to-do list: 'Relax' |
What Kraken center Matty Beniers is not going to do with his hard-earned summer break is stress about a certain rookie of the year award. “I'm going to go home, and I'm gonna relax,” he said Wednesday as the Kraken wrapped up their exit meetings and packed. The 2023 NHL Awards will air live June 26 from Nashville's Bridgestone Arena (5 p.m., TNT). Hingham, Mass., native Beniers is up for the Calder Trophy. |

Salk: Kraken should look to Maple Leafs for offseason upgrades |
The Seattle Kraken had a great second season, recording 100 points in the standings, making the playoffs, knocking off the defending champs in Round 1 and pushing the Dallas Stars to Game 7 in Round 2. The good news for the Kraken is the majority of their roster is set to return this upcoming season. Top defenseman Vince Dunn is a restricted free agent, as is fellow D-man Will Borgen, center/winger Morgan Geekie and winger Daniel Sprong. Center/winger Ryan Donato is an urestricted free agent, as is backup goaltender Martin Jones and defenseman Carson Soucy. |

Kraken say playoffs the goal as once you're in 'you never know what can happen' |
Kraken general manager Ron Francis said in season-ending comments to local media Thursday that returning to the playoffs a year from now should be his team's ultimate goal. “I think the goal for me every year is to get in the playoffs and then once you get in the playoffs you never know what can happen,” Francis said. The Kraken's surprising run that included a Game 7 win over defending champion Colorado and taking Dallas the limit as well before losing 2-1 in Monday's elimination matchup garnered scores of new fans. Francis said players “weren't happy” about missing the Western Conference Final after coming so close. |

Close games, nerves and drama lacking from Carolina-New Jersey and Seattle-Dallas matchups |
All those emotions and feelings normally associated with the NHL playoffs have been mostly absent in the two conference semifinal series that resume on Thursday. The East matchup between Carolina and New Jersey and the West clash between Dallas and Seattle have so far been defined by blowouts that lack the drama normally associated with the postseason. Of the eight games played in those series so far, only one has been decided by one goal: Game 1 of the Seattle-Dallas series, won by the Kraken in overtime. |
