Sabres Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)
Derek Roy had to be thinking his time in Buffalo was over. The Sabres' top center had a miserable playoff series, and general manager Darcy Regier talked shortly thereafter about trying to improve the middle of the offense. As the season nears, however, Roy is still in two familiar spots: Buffalo and first-line center. "There's obviously pressure that comes with playoffs, and you've got to rise above it," said Roy, who had just two assists in the six-game loss to Boston. "Our guys are supposed to score and get points on the board, and we didn't." Roy, who has led the Sabres in points the last three seasons, has just two goals in his last 24 playoff games. The stat is an obvious disappointment to coach Lindy Ruff, but Roy says the two are of the same mindset heading...

Sabres give F Matt Ellis one-year, two-way deal (SportingNews.com)
Matt Ellis is the kind of forward Buffalo Sabres coach Lindy Ruff loves -- gritty, physical and a good locker-room presence. Critics would say Ellis is the perfect Ruff player because he's also a fourth-line winger who provides little offense. Fair or not, Ellis signed a one-year deal with the Sabres on Tuesday, his 29th birthday. The Sabres didn't disclose financial terms, but authoritative Capgeek.com reports the pact is for $625,000 at the NHL level and $105,000 if he slips to the AHL.

Sabres re-sign forward Ellis to 1-year contract (AP)
The Buffalo Sabres have re-signed unrestricted free agent forward Matt Ellis to a one-year contract. A gritty fourth-line player, Ellis rejoins the team for a third season after setting career-highs with 13 points (three goals, 10 assists) and 72 games played last year. The signing was announced by the team as Ellis celebrated his 29th birthday on Tuesday.

Tim Kennedy signs one-year deal with New York Rangers (SportingNews.com)
The New York Rangers announced Monday they have signed LW Tim Kennedy, who was bought out by the Buffalo Sabres earlier this summer after he won a $1 million arbitration decision. Kennedy, who scored 10 goals in 78 games for the Sabres last season, is expected to provide depth at a position that already features Brandon Dubinsky, Alexander Frolov, Sean Avery and tough guy Derek Boogaard. Kennedy, a Buffalo native, was stunned when he found out about the buyout but recently told the Buffalo News he was ready to move on.

Raffi Torres reportedly cuts deal with Vancouver Canucks (SportingNews.com)
Needing a gritty forward, the Vancouver Canucks on Wednesday signed winger Raffi Torres, according to published reports. The deal is a bargain -- one year, $1 million for a player who was paid nearly three times that last season. There's also a risk: Torres, who turns 29 in October, has been plagued by injuries in recent seasons. Still, it's a worthy gamble considering how well Torres plays when healthy. He has good hands, speed and a terrier mentality.

NHL at Sochi debate is going strong at World Hockey Summit (SportingNews.com)
TORONTO -- The Winter Olympics won’t be staged in Russia until 2014, but posturing already is going strong. IIHF president Rene Fasel wants to build off the success of the Vancouver Olympics by bringing NHL players back to the Sochi Games. He knows there will be resistance from the NHL and team owners, who question the payoff of shutting down the season for games in Russia. But following his session at the World Hockey Summit, Fasel said hockey must send the best players to the Winter Olympics.
