Sharks return home to take on Sabres
Through the early part of the season, the San Jose Sharks have had a hard time holding leads and closing out opponents. After a disappointing road trip, San Jose looks to reverse those trends on Thursday night against the Buffalo Sabres. The Sharks are back at SAP Center after dropping three of five, capped by a 3-2 setback to the New Jersey Devils on Sunday.

Wickenheiser, Pegula reflect NHL’s trend toward diversity
With a laugh, Kim Pegula’s competitive nature kicked in when the subject of the Toronto Maple Leafs hiring Hayley Wickenheiser was broached. Impressed as the Sabres president was by the gender-breaking move in August, Pegula’s first reaction was wondering how Buffalo’s cross-border rival beat her to the punch in making Wickenheiser the NHL’s first woman to hold a hockey operations role as assistant director of player development. The NHL’s first female team president then turned serious.

The Buzzer: Murray shuts out Leafs; Raanta spoils Crawford’s return
It has been a tough start to the season for Pittsburgh Penguins goalie Matt Murray. Then he had to return to the lineup, on the road, against the highest scoring team in the NHL, the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Colorado Avalanche and New Jersey Devils were two of the most surprising playoff teams in the NHL a year ago, and were both led by MVP caliber performances from their best players (Nathan MacKinnon and Taylor Hall respectively, with Hall actually winning the award).

Sharks overcome late game struggles with 'best period of the season'
The Sharks were well aware of the score when they went into the dressing room at the second intermission. In both of those games, San Jose gave away the lead in the third frame on their way to losing both games. On Thursday night, however, Team Teal came out buzzing against the Buffalo Sabres.

Sharks notes: Joakim Ryan, Peter DeBoer and teammates react to fight
"I feel fine," Ryan said. Ryan dropped the gloves with Buffalo Sabres defenseman Zach Bogosian with San Jose's 5-1 win all but over on Thursday. As the clock wound down, Bogosian checked Sharks winger Melker Karlsson into the boards while they battled for a loose puck.
