Kyle Palmieri, the other forward Ray Shero stole for the Devils
When the New Jersey Devils hired Ray Shero to be their new general manager back in 2015 he was facing a rather daunting task of rebuilding what was, at the time, one of the league’s dullest teams. It was coming off of its third consecutive non-playoff season, it seemed to have zero impact players anywhere in the organization (nobody had scored more than 45 points at the NHL level the year before), and it just seemed to be a team going nowhere. In the years that followed Shero has rebuilt the Devils into a playoff team thanks in large part to a couple of significant trades (and a little luck in the draft lottery), with the most significant of those deals being the one that brought them Taylor Hall, the 2017-18 NHL MVP, from the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for defenseman Adam Larsson.

NHL roundup: Avalanche hand Devils first loss
Gabriel Landeskog recorded his third career hat trick by scoring the tiebreaking goal with 3:22 remaining on Thursday, and the visiting Colorado Avalanche recorded a 5-3 victory over the New Jersey Devils, who became the last NHL team to lose a game this season. Landeskog completed his first hat trick since Dec. 16 by firing a one-timer from the right circle over Keith Kinkaid's glove while falling to his knees in Newark, N.J. Colorado's Mikko Rantanen and Nathan MacKinnon each tallied points for the seventh consecutive game.

Sharks return home to take on Sabres
Through the early part of the season, the San Jose Sharks have had a hard time holding leads and closing out opponents. After a disappointing road trip, San Jose looks to reverse those trends on Thursday night against the Buffalo Sabres. The Sharks are back at SAP Center after dropping three of five, capped by a 3-2 setback to the New Jersey Devils on Sunday.

Sharks overcome late game struggles with 'best period of the season'
The Sharks were well aware of the score when they went into the dressing room at the second intermission. In both of those games, San Jose gave away the lead in the third frame on their way to losing both games. On Thursday night, however, Team Teal came out buzzing against the Buffalo Sabres.
